Equipment

  • Rice Cooker or Pot
  • Frying Pan
  • Musubi Mold or Plastic Wrap
  • Knife
  • Cutting Board

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 cups uncooked short-grain white rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 6 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 can Spam sliced into 10 slices
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar for sauce
  • 5 sheets nori (dry seaweed) cut in half

Instructions

  • Cook rice according to package instructions or in a rice cooker. Let it cool slightly.
  • Mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Stir into cooked rice to season.
  • In a frying pan over medium heat, cook Spam slices until browned on both sides. Add soy sauce and sugar, cook until caramelized.
  • Place a musubi mold (or shape with plastic wrap) over a piece of nori. Layer rice, a slice of Spam, and another thin layer of rice. Press down gently but firmly.
  • Wrap the nori around the musubi. Seal with a bit of water if needed.

Notes

Use slightly wet hands or plastic wrap to handle sticky rice easily. Spam Musubi can be made ahead and kept wrapped tightly at room temperature for a few hours or refrigerated for a day.
